Myself and two friends are flying into San Antonio on Sunday March 9th and we are there for only the night. Driving to Austin in the morning (Guys golf trip). Does anyone have any suggestions on hotels downtown? Nightlife? What else is there to do on a Sunday and Sunday night in San Antonio? Thanks in advance!!! |

Do the river walk it is awesome
With the limited time available I would get a hotel on the Riverwalk or Downtown Area, and spend my time there. While the city has many opportunities, they can be widespreaad and you would spend a lot of time driving and parking. You can generally stay occupied in the downtown area. If you had more time I would suggest some area golf courses, such as La Canterra, where the Valero Open is held.
This website will give you a listing of some of the Riverwalk Hotels. You can also look at the same site for some of the other 59 downtown hotels.
There are number of fine restaurants on the Paseo del Rio. Some of the San Antonio Residents’ favorite Riverwalk establishments are :Boudro’s on the River, Paesano’s, Biga on the Banks, Acenar Restaurant and Pesca on the River.
Have a great time on your trip!
I would suggest the Marriot River Walk I believe it is called. Or its Marriot River Center. the one that is by the mall haha. its a very accomidating hotel with the River Walk right below you and with balconys you can go out on. I spent 6 days there. Its about $160 a night though but well worth it.
the riverwalk for sure on this visit since it’s short. you can check out the Menger Hotel. if you want a great restaurant on the riverwalk i would suggest BROUDY’s .
have fun in Austin. i love it there too .
Skip the Alamo it sucks big time. TX cannot figure out how to have a productive state historic site without screwing it up. It looks more like a giant gift shop and restroom than an important part of American history. If you want to see cool historic stuff, any of the San Antonio Missions are a great visit. We were forced to live in Corpus Christi, TX for two years with the Navy and have decided TX is way more talk and no action. BUT the missions were cool as was the river walk area of downtown. They have tons of bars and restaurants in that area if you want some night life.
I would agree that on that short of a time. do the Riverwalk and see the Alamo.
On your way to Austin, go to Gruene Texas. Eat at the Grist Mill, great food and there is a great old bar, called Gruene Hall.
Have a Shiner beer
Sunday nights are pretty lame. It’s a shame you aren’t here on a weekend night or even a Wednesday. You might try White Rabbitt or Sam’s Burger Joint or even the Bonham. I would suggest dinner and a movie and to just check out the local historical areas like the riverwalk, the alamo and even places like Ripleys. Oh, I don’t like the Gristmill. Pretty atmosphere if it’s not cold and if it’s not raining, but if you are going to spend that kind of money, go somewhere like the Silo on Austin Hwy. Or if you like Mexican food, Mi Tierra which really has that authetic San Antonio feel with the Mariachi bands and color, color, color, plus the food and drinks are great. It’s in the Mexican Market on the other side of Commerce near I35.
If you like gentlemen’s clubs then check out All-Stars.
If you get there in time for lunch, I highly recommend the Liberty Bar.
Stay at the Plaza or the St. Anthony.
Dinner at Zuni Grill, Boudro’s (make sure you get the guacamole) or Casa Rio (the oldest restaurant on the river) if you’re in the mood for Mexican food.
Go to the Landing, (jazz) Swig, (martinis) Mad Dog’s (good view of the river) or the bar at the Menger. (Be sure to see the scar on the bar from Carrie Nation’s ax.)
Walk past the Alamo, tilt your head and say “Gee it’s smaller than I thought it would be.”
Go to the Tower of the America’s, tell them you’re going to the bar, (so you don’t have to pay eight bucks for the elevator)
have an over-priced beer and enjoy the best view in town.
